Electromechanical Instruments

Reading the name of the instrument you can easily understand that the instruments which has electrical as well as mechanical parts or processes also, that's called Electromechanical Instrument. A manually operated switch is an electromechanical components because its mechanical movement causing the electrical output. So Electromechanics means the interaction between the electrical system and mechanical system. This mechanism is especially prevalent in systems such as rotating electrical machines which is designed and operated from a mechanical process to generate power (generator) or use power for getting the mechanical output (motor). So like electromechanical components or systems there are electromechanical instruments where we provide electrical signal to get reading by mechanical movement of the pointer. That's why this instruments are also called Analog Meters.

Example :- Ammeter, Energy Meter, Voltmeter etc.

Electrical Measurement
Ammeter

This instruments are classified based on quantity they are used to measure, operating principle and representation of output.

1. Classification based on the quantity they are used to measure :

  • Ammeter - This instrument is used to measure the current in a circuit.
  • Voltmeter - This instrument is used to measure the voltage across any electrical components.
  • Wattmeter - This instrument is used measure the power of a system.
  • Energy Meter - This instrument is used to measure how much energy is used in a system.
  • Power Factor Meter - This instrument is used to measure the power factor (CosΦ) of a system.

2. Classification on the basis of operating principle :

  • Electromagnetic Instrument - By giving electrical input, a magnetic domain will be created and output will be in mechanical domain.
  • Electrostatic Instrument - This instrument involves the use of capacitor because capacitors can store the charge which is in static form.
  • Induction Type Instrument - This type of instrument use the principle of electromagnetic induction.
  • Thermal Instrument - This type of instrument works on the principle of heat. When heat will be developed in that instrument which will lead to a mechanical displacement or mechanical motion.

 3. Classification based on representation of output :

  • Indicating Type - There will be needle to point the measured value. As an example in case of ammeter, the ammeter measured the value and the pointer or needle shows the measured value. Example - Ammeter, Voltmeter, Wattmeter
  • Integrating Type - We know energy is basically integral of power (E = ∫p*dt). So Energy Meter is an example of Integrating type instrument.
  • Null-detector Type - This type of instrument use to find the zero deflection in galvanometer. Example - Potentiometer.
  • Recording Type - The data is being recorded in this type of instrument. Example - Galvanometer.
